What is Eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition that is characterised by intense itchiness, redness, dryness, and sometimes blistering, weeping or crusting, arising from inflammation of the skin, on small patches or large swathes of the body. People with eczema typically have dry and sensitive skin, and can easily fall into an itch-scratch cycle – dry.
While the exact causes of eczema are still widely discussed and investigated, there are usually 2 possible factors: genetic or environmental.
Skin-care for Eczema
There is no definite cure for eczema, but implementing a suitable skincare routine is very crucial to managing eczema effectively. Moisturising regularly, in particular, is the key to keeping the skin hydrated, which relieves dryness and prevents falling into the itch-scratch cycle. Select mild, fragrance-free and non-irritating skincare that soothes and protects the skin without triggering inflammation.
Cetaphil Restoraderm line and its ingredients
The Cetaphil RestoraDerm line was specifically created for customers suffering from Eczema symptoms, and currently includes two products; the Eczema Calming Body Wash and the Eczema Calming Body Moisturizer. To better understand how Cetaphil RestoraDerm products work, it’s a good idea to consider the ingredients included in the formulations.
● Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Body Wash: The problem with a lot of soaps and body washes is that they are too drying. They’re great at removing excess dirt and oil, but leave the skin dry and prone to Eczema outbreaks. To change this, Cetaphil RestoraDerm Calming Body Wash was formulated with many moisturizing and calming ingredients. For example, it contains ingredients like shea butter, to moisturize; sunflower seed oil, to strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier; glycerin, to boost hydration; and citric acid, to reduce the cleanser’s alkalinity.
● Cetaphil Skin Restoring Body Moisturizer: To further reduce Eczema symptoms, the Cetaphil RestoraDerm moisturizer contains a number of skin soothing ingredients. In fact, the cream has been certified by scientists that it is so gentle to be used on babies just a few months old. Some of the ingredients in the RestoraDerm moisturizer include capric triglyceride, to moisturize; caprylyl glycol, to condition the skin; shea butter and sunflower seed oil, to add hydration; glycerin, a well-known emollient; Filaggrin technology™ to rebuild healthy skin barrier and patented Ceramide technology to nourish skin and retain moisture.
Why Cetaphil RestoraDerm works better than other products
These two products work by infusing the skin with moisture (skin dryness is an Eczema trigger), and by addressing skin itching.
The formulation contains filaggrin break-down products that help increase and retain moisture content, by supplementing the natural moisturising factors of the skin (pH = 4,6). People with eczema-prone skin may be deficient in the gene for making Filaggrin which may result in a shortage of this protein. A lack of Filaggrin makes it easier for moisture to escape as your skin barrier is compromised, making your skin vulnerable and prone to dehydration.
The patented Ceramide technology in the lotion nourishes skin and increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
Cetaphil Restoraderm is the first skincare range* with Filaggrin technology™ to help restore your skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor and help rebuild a healthy skin barrier. This in turn helps soothe your skin and reduces itchiness, which aids in stopping the itch-scratch cycle for people with eczema-prone skin. By hydrating and strengthening the skin’s barrier function, Cetaphil Restoraderm provides relief from itch and redness for eczema-prone skin.
Cetaphil products are developed for total body use and suitable for the entire family including infants over 3 months old.
